The box arrives November 12. Grand Theft Auto VI — Rockstar’s Vice City game, thirteen years after the last numbered one — launches a week later on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Standard is $79.99. Ultimate is $99.99. The physical version is a download code. Rockstar’s own support page says a disc will not be included.
Pre-order existed to allocate scarce objects. Plastic. A print run. A shelf that could miss you. A license is not an object. The storefront can mint another one whenever it wants, and on Sony’s own court theory it can take that one back. Paying eighty or a hundred dollars months before anyone has played the game is not meeting demand. It is locking the sale before the reviews exist.
What They Already Told a Court
In They Can’t Have It Both Ways, Sony told a federal court that reasonable consumers already knew a digital game was a license, not ownership. PlayStation Terms §8.4: you buy a personal license and “do not own the product.” §10.2: the license is “revocable.”
Sit with that. I am not going to replay the deleted libraries here. The useful fact is the one they already put on paper.
What the Line Was For
Midnight launches were about inventory. A truck. A finite stack of cases. You put money down so the store ordered enough, or so you were first when the stack ran out. That world could actually miss you. A burned disc takes a factory. A license takes a row in a database.
If the licenses are scarce, that is their fault. Server capacity is a budget. Bandwidth is a budget. The November 12 pre-load is them asking you to solve their pipe with your disk and your money, five months after they opened the register.
Digital sold-out is a choice.
The Off Switch
Rockstar does not have to pull Grand Theft Auto VI on November 20 for the clause to matter. Sony already deleted purchased libraries. The chance is not a rumor. It is a clause.
Eighty dollars. A hundred if you want Ultimate — extra cars, guns, clothes, and story beats threaded through Jason and Lucia, the leads. Both prices buy the same legal object. Permission. With a contractual kill switch.
The Pack
They could offer a trial. If they can mint access at will and revoke it at will, play-then-pay is the honest product. They do not sell that. They sell the Vintage Vice City Pack — items that “flash back to when the neon burned brightest” — and a month of GTA+ if you pay before November 20. That is not demand. That is bait for a sale that has to close before anyone can say whether the game is good.
Wait for the reviews. The license will still be there. If it is not, they have answered the question for you.
The box will still show up November 12 for the people who could not wait. Open it. There is a slip of paper.
